Meeting on the use of Binna grass to protect rivers and canals under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister

News Desk: A meeting on the use of Binna grass for protecting riverbanks and canal embankments was held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The meeting took place on Thursday (6 August) at the Cabinet Division of the Bangladesh Secretariat, according to the Prime Minister's Deputy Press Secretary, Shahadat Shadhin.

During the meeting, Dr. Muhammad Shariful Islam, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and a faculty member of its Department of Civil Engineering, delivered a presentation on the use of Binna grass as an environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative to concrete blocks and geoblocks for preventing erosion along riverbanks and canals, protecting coastal embankments, and stabilizing roads in char areas, haor regions, as well as roads and railway lines.

Dr. Islam explained that Binna grass could serve as an effective, eco-friendly, and long-term solution for controlling riverbank and canal erosion. He noted that the grass has already been used on a trial basis in several parts of the country, where it produced encouraging results. In light of these positive outcomes, the meeting also discussed implementing the initiative on a larger scale through dedicated development projects.

The Prime Minister praised such innovative and environmentally sustainable initiatives aimed at protecting the country's natural resources and instructed the relevant ministries and agencies to take the necessary steps for their effective implementation.

The meeting was attended by Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir; Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muqtadir; Water Resources Minister Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie; Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Robiul Alam; State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hossain Azad; State Minister for Railways Habibur Rashid; Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister A.B.M. Abdus Sattar; Additional Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Atikur Rahman Ruman; as well as senior officials from the relevant ministries and divisions.
