Dhaka, June 21 (CNI): The government will recruit 100,000 new health workers and 25,000 midwives over the next three to four years to ensure primary healthcare services for people across the country, according to S.M. Ziauddin Haider, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser on Health Affairs.
He said the government aims to strengthen primary healthcare and transform the healthcare system from a treatment-centered model to a prevention-centered approach.
To achieve this goal, plans have been undertaken to recruit the large number of health workers and midwives over the next few years. The government is also working to establish primary healthcare units at the union and ward levels, upgrade Upazila Health Complexes to 100-bed facilities, and ensure integrated healthcare services for mothers and newborns.
Ziauddin Haider disclosed the information while briefing journalists on current issues at the Secretariat on Sunday after returning from an official visit to Lisbon, Portugal.
He noted that before recruiting such a significant number of midwives, special emphasis would be placed on enhancing their training to improve the quality of services at the field level. The government has already taken necessary initiatives to upgrade training standards.
Referring to the government's new plan for grassroots healthcare services, he said a strong Primary Health Care Network would be established at the union level across the country. Under this network, existing community clinics and their healthcare workers would provide services directly to people by visiting households.
The Special Assistant also made it clear that no community clinic in the country would be shut down.
“Community clinics will continue to operate as they are. However, this new Primary Health Care Network will work to expand healthcare coverage and bring medical services closer to people's doorsteps,” he said.
He further mentioned that Bangladesh’s healthcare development plans were presented at the 34th International Congress of the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) held in Lisbon, Portugal. He participated as a keynote speaker at the opening session of the conference, which was attended by representatives from 122 countries.
