Men and women are busy in planting garlic

Dinajpur Correspondent: Khassama Upazila has a special value in Dinajpur district as it is a suitable land for garlic cultivation. In early December, men and women gathered in villages around Kachinia Bazar in the upazila and spent a lot of time planting garlic along the lines. From a distance, it seems that the Kushak peasants are sitting in the fields and picking what they can.

As most of the garlic is cultivated in the district, the Department of Agriculture targets this upazila. Garlic cultivation is going on in every field of the upazila with the target of record amount of garlic cultivation in the current season. Garlic cultivation has become popular in the region as the price of garlic is good and the yield is high.

According to the Upazila Agriculture Department, the target for planting garlic in the current season has been set at 2600 hectares of land in the upazila, but only in this Khansama Upazila. This garlic planting activity will continue for 10-15 days. It can be seen on the ground in Jugirghopa, Kayempur, Jowar, Kachinia, Ramnagar, Goaldihi villages of the upazila, farmers are planting garlic in groups without cultivating it. Someone lands

Talking to the farmers, it is learned that the cost of cultivating garlic in each acre of land is around Tk 20,000. The cost of seeds, chemical fertilizers and irrigation is another 30,000 rupees. It costs about 50 thousand rupees per acre. With good yield, 55 to 60 tons of garlic is available per acre. If the average price of garlic is two and a half to three thousand rupees per ounce, the price is around 1 lakh 40 thousand to one and a half lakh rupees. Excluding the cost of picking, sorting and marketing garlic at home is around Tk 20,000, but the profit is around Tk 60,000 to 70,000. Mojibur Rahman, a garlic farmer from Kayempur village, said he is leasing two bighas of land for Tk 22,000 this year. He is cultivating garlic in short time and with less labor than other crops and now the price of garlic is good. Kazem Ali, a farmer from Kachinia village, said he planted garlic on one bigha of land with seeds, fertilizers and labor at a total cost of Tk 20,000. About 30-35 tons of garlic can be obtained per bigha by spending another 5-6 thousand rupees till the garlic is taken home. Garlic is less susceptible to diseases and insects than other crops. He is cultivating garlic without any kind of land cultivation as the yield is good with less capital and less labor.

Basudeb Roy, Upazila Agriculture Officer, said that garlic is a spicy cash crop. Due to low cost and high profit, this crop is being cultivated at a large rate at present. Deputy Assistant Officers are working at the field level to encourage and assist the farmers in garlic cultivation. The cultivation of this crop will increase further in the future.
