Kurigram Correspondent : Silage is being made from corn straw at Rajarhat in Kurigram, which will largely solve the shortage of cow feed. On this occasion, a learning exchange program on silage making was held. Funded by USID, CARE Bangladesh organized the Souhardya-3 Plus program. Bangladesh Agricultural University Mymensingh Professor Dr. The pilot project of making silage from maize straw is being implemented with the full cooperation of AKM Ahsan Kabir. The main objective of the program is to share the results and learning of the 6-month pilot project.

The Souhardya-3 Plus program trains a participant to become an entrepreneur for silage production and provides overall support for setting up production plants. The silage produced is of good quality and affordable and has been well received by farmers. In this method, after harvesting the corn kernels from the corn plant, silage is made from the stem and leaves of the plant. As a result, on the one hand, the farmer will benefit by collecting the produced corn, on the other hand, the environment will be helped by the use of abandoned corn stalks.

Silage produced in this process is cost effective. This feed can be used as a quality fiber feed for cattle under any conditions throughout the year. As a result, the health of the cattle will be good throughout the year and the income of the farmers will increase along with the increase in productivity. Deputy Director of Agricultural Extension Directorate, Agriculture Abdullah Al-Mamun, was present as the chief guest in the learning exchange meeting held at Chinnai Union of Rajarhat Upazila of Kurigram on Tuesday.

District Animal Resources Officer Dr. Md. Monakka Ali, Deputy Director of Animal Resources Department Dr. Md. Abdul Aziz Pradhan, Rajarhat Upazila Agriculture Extension Officer Heimanti Rani, Upazila Animal Resources Officer Dr. Md. Mahafuzur Rahman, Care Bangladesh's Agriculture and Livelihood Project team were present as special guests. Leader Dr. Hedaytul Islam, Technical Manager Sushil Kumar Das. Hundreds of farmers and street vendors participated in it.

Silage producer Sohrab Hossain said, I had no idea about making silage from corn straw. I was shocked to learn about Souhardya-3 project. After getting their assurance, I invested with the house and got various materials with their help.

On the other hand, after getting hands-on training, we produced 200 kg of silage last year. I earn 32 thousand rupees by supplying the produced silage to various feed sellers' shops and by feeding my 3 cows, the cows are also well nourished due to which I benefit financially. So I have set a target of 600 kg silage production this year. Farmers and traders will benefit from collecting silage from me at an affordable price.

District Livestock Officer Dr. Md. Monakka Ali said that the demand for beef feed is increasing day by day due to the increase in cattle rearing rate. In this situation, by making silage with corn straw, the shortage of cattle feed will be reduced to a large extent. Abdullah Al-Mamun, the deputy director of the Department of Agricultural Extension, said that the straw was used as fuel after the rise of corn. Now if cow feed can be made from it, farmers will be able to earn extra income besides corn.

Care Bangladesh's Agriculture and Livelihood Project Team Leader Dr. Hedaytul Islam said, there are about 400 pastures in Kurigram where a large amount of corn is grown and cattle are reared. There is a lot of demand for fodder from these pastures. Realizing this fact, if silage production from corn straw can be spread in pastures with public-private support, on the one hand it will be possible to solve the crisis of cattle feed and farmers will be able to earn additional income.
