News Desk: Ferry service is closed at Shimulia-Banglabazar river ghat due to thick fog. Seven ferries with more than a thousand passengers and vehicles are stranded in the middle of the river in the winter. There are more than 500 vehicles waiting to cross on both sides. Gradually the waiting line of vehicles is getting longer. As a result, human suffering is now extreme. This route is closed from 2 pm on Sunday.

According to the relevant sources, as the intensity of the fog increased, the distance could not be determined even after lighting the navigable lights after midnight. As a result, the directional light becomes dim. Authorities blocked the ferry to avoid an accident as they could not determine the direction of the Padma.

Shafiqul Islam, assistant director of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC), said the waterway was covered in a foggy moon. The ferry service was stopped to avoid the accident as buoys and lights could not be seen in the thick fog.

Of the 14 ferries plying this route, only the Birshreshtha Jahangir ferry has foglights. It is not suitable for movement in this fog as it is not standard.

Meanwhile, 8 launches and 400 half speedboats are all closed on this route.

BIWTC Marine Officer (Shimulia Ghat) Ahmed Ali said all types of vessels, including ferries, were closed. When the fog clears, the movement will be normal.
