Pabna Pratnidh: The organization called 'Chalanbil Raksha Andolan' has demanded to stop illegal cutting and selling of soil from Gumani river in Chatmohar and Bhangura upazilas of Pabna. The member secretary of environmental organization Chalanbil Raksha Andolan and Central Joint General Secretary of Bangladesh Environment Andolan (Bapa) SM Mizanur Rahman has given this demand in writing to Pabna District Administrator, Chatmohar and Bhangura upazila executive officers.

According to the written complaint, Gumani is an important river in Chalanbil region. At different places of this river including Mirzapur of Nimaichra Union of Chatmohar Upazila and Rupsi and Jhabjhbia of Ashtamanisha Union of Bhangura Upazila, the river is dried up by cross dams and a group of interested parties is cutting and selling the soil. The festival of destructive activities of the river is going on. The petitioner demanded an immediate stop to river silting and action against those involved. Meanwhile, SM Mizanur Rahman said that a human chain will be held in front of Chatmohar Upazila Parishad on Sunday (March 24) in front of Chatmohar Upazila Parishad to demand the stop of soil cutting.

Incidentally, an influential group is cutting and selling soil from rivers, canals and croplands in various areas of Chatmohar and Bhangura upazilas. The name is being changed as the leader of the ruling party. These soils are going to illegally established brick kilns. Almost all brickyards in Chatmohar upazila have been set up illegally. They have no approval. No documents required. Matikhekoras are cutting soil and selling it day and night, showing the thumb to the local administration. Soil transport causes irreparable damage to traffic roads.

Chatmohar Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Md. Reduanul Halim said that action must be taken if soil is cut illegally.
