In Kurigram, the water of three rivers is above the danger level, thousands of people are stranded

Kurigram Correspondent: The water level of all the rivers in Kurigram has increased due to the downpour and heavy rains. The water level of Dharla, Brahmaputra and Dudhkumar rivers in the district has exceeded the danger level due to rising water level. Thousands of people have been flooded. Dugartara is in trouble as water has entered the houses in the river basin. The Water Development Board (Paubo) has forecast that the flood situation could worsen in the next few days. In this situation, the concerned people are fearing floods in the medium term in the district. According to Paubo's control room, at 9am on Friday (June 18), water from the Dharla River was flowing 9 cm above the danger level at Bridge Point. At the same time the water of Brahmaputra was rising and flowing at Chilmari point 5 cm above the danger level. Dudhkumar is not behind in the game of increasing water. Due to the increase in speed and height of this river, it is flowing over 9 cm of danger level at Pateshwari point of Sadar. Teesta water is also increasing. Paubo said the flood situation in the district could worsen in the next 48 hours due to the possibility of heavy rains upstream of these rivers. As a result of rising water of Brahmaputra, water has started entering various islands in the lower part of Sadar and Ulipur upazilas. Thousands of families have been trapped in the water. Hundreds of houses in Bhogdanga and Panchgachhi Unions of Sadar have been flooded. At least 6-7 thousand families of Jatrapur Union of Sadar and Begumganj Union of Ulipur have become waterlogged due to rising waters of Brahmaputra and Dudhkumar rivers. Many people have taken shelter in boats and scaffolding as water has entered the house. Many families have reportedly left their homes and taken refuge in nearby high-rise settlements. Anwar Hossain, a UP member of Ward 6 of Jatrapur Union, said water had entered hundreds of houses in several villages in the lower reaches of the Brahmaputra in his ward. Thousands of families in these villages have been flooded. Abdul Gafur, chairman of the union, said the flood situation in his union was bad. At least 5,000 families were flooded overnight. Floodwaters have inundated more than a thousand settlements across the union. The chairman said, "The water level is rising. Some residents of Char Bhagwatipur and Jhunkar Char have left their homes and taken shelter in nearby houses. At least 5,000 families have been flooded. We are collecting information. " Abdul Baten Sarkar, chairman of Panchgachhi union, said six wards of his union were inundated. The UP chairman also said that the local administration has taken a report on the flood situation. Thousands of people in several unions of Ulipur upazila of the district have been inundated due to inundation of Brahmaputra basin. Water has entered the lowland settlements. Monnaf Ali, a UP member from Ward 9 of Begumganj Union in Ulipur, said, "The situation is very bad. Huhu koira water is rising. More than two hundred houses in my ward are flooded. People are taking shelter on the scaffolding. ' Citing the flood forecasting and warning center, Abdullah Al Mamun, executive engineer of Paubo, Kurigram, said, "Heavy rainfall is forecast upstream for the next 48 hours. This could lead to flooding in the next few days. Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rezaul Karim said, "The required number of speed boats, boats and shelters have been kept ready to rescue the victims." Instructions have been given in the upazilas with necessary allocations. ‘To address the overall situation, Rs 20 lakh and 560 metric tonnes of rice have been allocated. There is also an allocation of one thousand packets of food from the gift of the Prime Minister, ”added the Deputy Commissioner.
