The Philippine community in Bangladesh hosted a vibrant gathering to celebrate the 128th Philippine National Day, bringing together Filipinos, expatriates, friends, and members of the wider Bangladeshi community.
On the occasion, CNI News spoke exclusively with Ms. Karen Samson, President of the Philippine Community in Bangladesh, about the future of the Filipino community, Bangladesh–Philippines friendship, business cooperation, education exchange, and community development.
CNI: We can see a large gathering here today as the Philippine community in Bangladesh celebrates the 128th Philippine National Day. As the President of this active and progressive community, what is your future plan for Filipinos living and working in Bangladesh?
Ms. Karen Samson: My future plan is to help our fellow Filipinos and other expatriates working here in Bangladesh to flourish, stay connected, and feel more united. Many Filipinos are working in different sectors, especially in the garments and textile industry.
Bangladesh is truly the heart of the garments industry. The textile sector is one of the major strengths of this country and contributes greatly to the economy. Many Filipinos also work with dedication in this industry, and we truly value what we do.
For many of us, Bangladesh has become our second home. We consider Bangladeshi people as our brothers and sisters. We do not see them as strangers; we see them as part of our extended family.
There are many Filipinos working in different places across Bangladesh. Events like this help us come together, strengthen our bond, and support one another as a community.
CNI: Apart from the garments and textile sector, do you think there are other sectors in Bangladesh where the Filipino community can contribute, invest, or build stronger business cooperation?
Ms. Karen Samson: Yes, I strongly believe so. Bangladesh is a growing and flourishing country. It has great potential for the future. I have a very positive view of Bangladesh and its development.
There are many opportunities here, and with proper cooperation, the Filipino community can contribute in different sectors as well.
CNI: Do you think renewable energy could be a possible sector for future investment and cooperation in Bangladesh?
Ms. Karen Samson: Yes, there are possibilities. Bangladeshis are very positive about the future. The people here are resilient, hardworking, and competitive. Because of that, I believe sectors like renewable energy can also grow in the future.
CNI: Do you have any plan to promote scholarship exchange opportunities between Bangladeshi and Filipino students?
Ms. Karen Samson: That is something I would really look forward to. The Philippines is open to welcoming students and scholars. In the future, maybe not immediately but certainly as a possibility, we can explore scholarship exchange opportunities between Bangladesh and the Philippines.
Such initiatives can help young people from both countries understand each other better and build stronger friendship.
CNI: What are the major challenges or hurdles you are facing in strengthening the Filipino community here in Bangladesh?
Ms. Karen Samson: One of the challenges is that our community is relatively small. We may be around 100, 200, or 300 people, and we are working in different areas and different professions.
Because we are spread out, it is sometimes difficult to bring everyone together. But through communication, connection, and community events, we can support each other and remain united despite our differences.
CNI: Do you expect any support from the government to help grow and strengthen the Filipino community in Bangladesh?
Ms. Karen Samson: Yes, I would truly welcome that. Community support is very important because without a community, many people can feel lonely, especially those who are away from home.
Filipinos living abroad often miss their families and homeland. Social gatherings and community events give them a sense of belonging, happiness, and emotional support.
Even once a year is meaningful, and twice a year would be even better. I am trying my best to organize and continue these activities. It is not easy, and there are many challenges, but I am fortunate because my husband and our community officers are always beside me. They are very supportive.
Without their help, it would not be possible. No one can do everything alone. A strong community needs teamwork, cooperation, and support from everyone.
CNI: As the President of the Philippine Community in Bangladesh, would you like to give any message to the Bangladeshi community?
Ms. Karen Samson: Yes, I would like to say to the Bangladeshi community that whenever there are future projects, initiatives, or opportunities for cooperation, please do not hesitate to contact us.
The Filipino community is here, ready to support, cooperate, and contribute. We may sometimes remain behind the curtains, but we are always willing to participate and work together for stronger friendship between the Filipino and Bangladeshi communities.
CNI News: Thank you, Ms. Karen Samson, for sharing your thoughts with us.
Ms. Karen Samson: Thank you very much.
