Report says, 297 road accidents occurred last month: 361 killed, 348 injured

CNI Desk: At least 361 people were killed and 348 sustained injuries in 297 road accidents that took place at different parts across the country during the month of June, said a report published today by a non-government organisation, Road Safety Foundation.

Of the 361, 57 were women and 32 were children, according to the report.

Around 94 people died from 103 motorcycle accidentswhich were 26.03 percent of the total fatality, the organisation said.

Some 76 pedestrians were run over which is 21.05 percent while 49 drivers and assistants of vehicles were killed which is 13.57 percent of the total deaths.

Besides, around 56 people were killed and 23 went missing in 11 waterway accidents while seven people died in six train accidents in the same month.

Road Safety Foundation collected the data based on reports in seven national dailies, five online news portals and electronic media.

In the report, the foundation find out10 reasons behind the accidents. Among those are: unfit vehicles, reckless driving, drivers' incompetenceand their lack of physical and mental capacity, unregulated working hours for drivers,plying of low-speed vehicles on highway, reckless driving of motorcycles by youths, lack of knowledge on traffic management and tendency of violating traffic rules, poor traffic management, lacking inBangladesh Road Transport Authority's capacity and extortion in the public transport sector.
