News Desk: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation. He is also stepping down as leader of the Labour Party. Starmer made the announcement on Monday (June 22) at 10 Downing Street in London.
In his resignation statement, Starmer said, “Walking down this street two years ago was the proudest moment of my life. A new labor government—the first in 14 years. After years of frustration and disappointment, it marked the beginning of a new chapter in our country’s history.”
He stated that he is now leaving office because he has always placed the national interest above all else. According to Starmer, Labour Party members of Parliament believe that new leadership is needed to lead the party into the next general election, and he has accepted that decision with respect.
Starmer noted that six years ago he took charge of a Labour Party facing political, financial, and moral challenges. He said that he successfully rebuilt the party and led it back to power after 14 years in opposition.
In his farewell address, he highlighted several achievements of his government, including economic growth, rising wages, reductions in healthcare waiting lists, expanded rights for workers and tenants, increased defense spending, and measures aimed at reducing poverty.
He announced that the Labor Party’s National Executive Committee will begin the process of selecting a new leader on July 9. If there is a contest, the election will be completed before the summer recess, and a new leader will take office by September.
Pledging his full support to his successor, Starmer said the next leader would inherit a Britain that is stronger and fairer than it was two years ago.
Toward the end of his remarks, he expressed gratitude to his wife, Vic, and their children, saying that after stepping away from politics he hopes to spend more time with his family.
Although he has announced his resignation, Starmer will continue to serve as prime minister until a new leader is elected. The next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom is expected to be chosen and assume office between August and September this year.
