The ongoing Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon are reshaping geopolitical dynamics in the Middle East. According to defense analysts, Tehran is seeking to exploit the conflict in an attempt to create divisions within the long-standing alliance between the United States and Israel.
International security experts believe Iran is using the situation in Lebanon as a strategic tool to widen the gap between the two close allies.
In an interview with Al Jazeera, defense analyst Wolfgang Pusztai said that Iran is currently using Lebanon as a means to deepen existing differences between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government and U.S. President Donald Trump's administration.
While Tehran's stated objective appears to be ending Israeli military actions in southern Lebanon, analysts argue that the reality is more complex. Tehran, Beirut, Hezbollah, and even President Trump understand that a complete halt to Israeli military operations is not a realistic expectation at this stage. Israel is likely to continue responding militarily whenever it perceives threats to its security.
According to the analysis, Israeli authorities may exercise temporary restraint in order to avoid undermining President Trump's ongoing diplomatic efforts and ceasefire initiatives. However, in the face of any provocation or attack, Israel is unlikely to hesitate in taking retaliatory measures to defend itself.
Iran views this complicated situation as a significant opportunity to weaken relations between Washington and Tel Aviv. Analysts suggest that Tehran's primary objective at present is to drive a wedge into the decades-long military and political alliance between the United States and Israel, and its current strategy appears to be directed toward that goal.
