Kurigram Correspondent:  In Ulipur of Kurigram, at the end of Poush, the winter-related diseases of diarrhea and dysentery are increasing with the intensity of winter. Most of the children and the elderly are being affected by the thick fog and severe cold. In the last 13 days, about a hundred patients with diarrhea and respiratory problems have been admitted to the 50-bed Upazila Health Complex. About three hundred more received treatment in the outpatient department from different areas of the upazila. Also many are taking treatment from various union health centers, private hospitals and village doctors. In addition to doctors' prescriptions, drug stores are seeing rush throughout the day.

Hospital authorities are also struggling to handle the pressure of diarrhea patients. Due to diarrhea and lack of children's ward, patients have to get beds on the floor and balcony. According to hospital sources, more than 100 diarrhea patients have been admitted from January 1 to January 13. Among these patients, the number of children is high. Many are returning home recovered and many are developing new pneumonia. 10-15 people are leaving the hospital every day, 7-8 people are being admitted. Patients from different upazilas are coming and admitted to this upazila health complex.

Among them, Chuya (13 months) suffering from acute diarrhea came from Bajra Tabakpur of Chilmari and Muaz (9 months) came from Hat village of Raniganj Fakir of Chilmari. Ruhan (8 months), Siam (11 months), Saima (1 year), Sabbir (11 months) and Tazmin (18 months). Among them, one named Bashir Habib has been referred to Kurigram Sadar Hospital for better treatment. Parents accompanying the patient claim diarrhea and urgent need for pediatric ward. Pictures of suffering of patients and their relatives were seen at Ulipur health complex. According to the responsible authorities, an average of hundreds of patients are receiving treatment every day due to diarrhoea, pneumonia, shortness of breath and cold.

Due to the shortage of beds, many are being treated on floors and balconies. However, they continued to try to provide treatment. Abdul Halim (90) of West Shibbari village of the municipality was admitted four days ago with difficulty in breathing and is currently healthy. Rozina from Raniganj of Chilmari upazila came with breathing problem, she is now quite healthy.

The parents of these patients said that the quality of treatment is much better than before. Senior staff nurse Dilara Jahan Dini and midwife Fahmida Akhter, who are in charge of medical services in the hospital ward, said that it is important to arrange a baby ward quickly along with increasing the beds in our hospital. No matter how the patients stay in the hospital, there is no error in their treatment. Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Meshkatul Abed said that the old building of 1982 had 31 beds.

Gradually converted to 50 beds. Severe winters have increased the incidence of diarrheal and respiratory diseases. I have been repeatedly informing the higher authorities about various problems including the children's ward, they are also hoping that all arrangements will be made soon. He also said that even with limited manpower, we are trying to provide the best possible medical care to the patients.
