Winter Pie Festival in Berobi

Nazrul Islam Raju, Rangpur Bureau: Pitha is an integral part of the culture and tradition of Bangladesh. Pitha-khawa village is considered as a traditional tradition of the people of Bengal. Due to the influence of modern urban culture, the traditional Rokmari pitha of rural Bengal is getting lost. Pitha Utsav was organized for the first time under the initiative of Rangpur Begum Rokeya University to introduce it to the new generation.       

On Tuesday (January 31) in the morning, Rangpur Begum Row, University's Independence Memorial Ground pitha festival was inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Dr. Sarifa Salwa Dina.  

Speaking at the opening ceremony presided over by Umar Farooq, convenor of Berobi winter pitha festival organizing committee, the vice-chancellor said that Pithapuli village is a thousand-year tradition of Bengal. With the advent of modern mechanical age, the tradition of pitha is gradually fading. The new generation should come forward to sustain the past traditions by participating in indigenous cultural practices like Pitha Utsav. He urged the students to practice culture along with their education.


University Treasurer Professor Dr. as a special guest. Mojib Uddin Ahmad said, pitha festival is a reflection of our contemporary Bengali tradition. Such arrangements strengthen the bond of mutual amity, harmony and brotherhood. The invited guests visited various stalls. At least 30 stalls of different departments and socio-cultural organizations of Begum Rokeya University were set up in the winter pitha festival. In all these stalls, various types of pithas are arranged. 

Patisapta, Puli, Pata Pitha, Coconut Pitha, Vapa Pitha, Dudhpuli, Malpoa, Phul Pitha, Jamai Pitha, Cabbage Pakora, Jhinuk Pitha, Raspuli are notable among these pithas. Ever since the inauguration, every stall was thronged with students. They come to this pitha festival that captures the native culture and enjoy different flavors of pitha. Apart from enjoying the taste of pitha, cultural performances are also organized for the visitors.

In the opening ceremony of pitha festival, the Dean of Faculty of Social Sciences and President of Teachers Association Md. Shariful Islam, General Secretary of Teachers Association Md. Asaduzzaman Mandal Asad, Registrar Engineer Mohammad Alamgir Chowdhury, Proctor Golam Rabbani, Director of Outdoor Activities Department Sabbir Ahmed Chowdhury, General Secretary of Officers Association Mohammad Ali, Berobi Branch Chhatra League President Pomel Barua, General Secretary Mahfuzur Rahman Shamim gave a welcome speech. Teachers, students, officers and employees of various departments were present on the occasion. Md. Zakir Rahman, Associate Professor of Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences conducted the program.
