Nazrul Islam, Rangpur Bureau: A court has sentenced Lavlu Mia to life imprisonment for brutally killing housewife Rehena Begum in Mithapukur of Rangpur by hitting her on the head with a stone several times. Rangpur Special Judge Rezaul Karim delivered the verdict on Tuesday afternoon. According to the details of the case, the accused Lavlu Mia, son of Abdus Sattar of Shankarpur Uttar Para village of Mithapukur upazila of Rangpur, was killed between 8pm and 8:30 pm on July 26, 2015. The plaintiff in the case, Khorshed Alam, said that Rehena Begum, mother of Khorshed Alam of nearby Madhyapara village in Shankarpur, entered the house through the window of her house with the intention of stealing but opened the drawer of the house but got only 100 rupees. Accused Lavlu Mia tried to snatch two gold earrings from Rehena Begum's ear by force. At one stage he snatched two earrings from her ears. At that time, Rehena Begum recognized the accused Lavlu and said her name. The accused hit Rehena Begum on the head with a large stone and killed her. Then his dead body was dragged away and left in a bamboo bush near the house. Khorshed Alam, son of Rehena Begum, who was killed in the incident, filed a murder case with Mithapukur Police Station. When the police arrested the accused Lavlu Mia, he confessed to the murder and gave a confessional statement under section 164 to the magistrate in the court. After the investigation, the police filed a chargesheet in the name of the accused Lavlu Mia. The court framed charges against the accused in the case on June 15, 2016. After the testimony of 21 witnesses and cross-examination, the judge convicted the accused Lavlu Mia under Section 302 of the Penal Code and sentenced him to one month imprisonment with life imprisonment for non-payment of a fine of Tk 3,000. Special PP Joynal Abedin Arejna Advocate, who is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government, said that they are satisfied with the verdict given by the plaintiffs.
