Chatmohar (Pabna) Correspondent: For the last few years, a limited range of black paddy has been cultivated in Chatmohar, Pabna. This small rice of black color is very thin, so the people who are fond of it and those who are fond of food make polao and payesh with it.

So the value of this fragrant rice is gradually increasing. Many amateur farmers have started cultivating this paddy along with other paddy for polao and payesh.

According to the Chatmohar Agriculture Office, black seed paddy has been cultivated in 15 hectares of land in Chatmohar this season. Some farmers have cultivated paddy in the high lands of Dibigram, Mulgram and Haripur of the upazila.

Mohammad Ali Jinnah, an agronomy teacher at Bilchalan Union High School, a Kalojira paddy farmer in Bejpara village of the upazila, said he has been cultivating Kalojira paddy for the last three years. This year, Kalojira has cultivated ten kathas of land.

He has so far incurred a cost of Rs. 3,000 for land preparation, purchase of seedlings, planting and weeding, labor cost and fertilizer. With good yield, 6 to 7 mana yield is obtained per bigha. The paddy can be sold at a price of 1800 to 2000 rupees. Some more money is earned by selling paddy straw.

Chatmohar Upazila Agriculture Officer AA Masum Billah said the price of Kalojira paddy in the market is always higher than any other paddy. However, the yield is slightly lower than other rice.
