Legal notice to Rajshahi DIG over the withdrawal of the controversial directive

News Desk: The Law and Salish Center has issued a legal notice to Rajshahi Range DIG Mohammad Shahjahan after he issued an official order directing police to show arrests in other cases immediately after influential leaders and activists of a banned organization were released on bail. The legal notice demands the withdrawal of the DIG’s directive.

On Monday (March 16), lawyers Syeda Nasrin and Shaheenuzzaman jointly sent the notice on behalf of the Law and Salish Center. The notice calls on the DIG to withdraw the directive within seven days, warning that a writ petition would be filed in the High Court if compliance is not made.

The notice states that in a “special official directive” issued on February 24, Rajshahi DIG Mohammad Shahjahan instructed that leaders and activists of the banned organization who, after being released on bail, are capable of strengthening, reorganizing, and actively mobilizing the organization in the field, must be shown arrested in other cases immediately after bail (so-called “shown arrest”).

The directive further stated that for those leaders and activists who are not capable of such active roles, there is currently no need to show arrest after bail. The instruction was sent by the Range DIG to the Superintendents of Police (SPs) of the districts under Rajshahi Range: Rajshahi, Chapainawabganj, Naogaon, Natore, Pabna, Sirajganj, Bogura, and Joypurhat.

Abu Ahmed Faizul Kabir, senior coordinator of the Law and Salish Center, said that the legal notice was officially delivered to the Rajshahi DIG on March 16. He expressed hope that the DIG, respecting the law, would issue orders to withdraw the controversial official directive.

Regarding this matter, DIG Mohammad Shahjahan declined to comment, saying, “I do not want to make any further statements on this. Whatever actions are required will be taken in accordance with the law.”
