Lalmonirhat Correspondent: A community courtyard meeting was held in Lalmonirhat to raise public awareness about sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) among women.
The awareness program was organized on Friday by the Lalmonirhat team of the youth organization Lal Sobuj Society in the Shibram area of Barobari Union, under Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila. The event brought together 50 grassroots women, with discussions focusing on the prevention, symptoms, early detection, and treatment of cervical cancer and breast cancer.
The session was led by Dr. Fatema Tuz Zohra (MBBS, Rajshahi; CCD, BIRDEM; DMU (Ultrasound); FCPS Final – Gynecology & Obstetrics), who served as the keynote speaker and resource person.
Dr. Fatema explained, in simple and accessible language, the early warning signs of breast and cervical cancer, easy methods for screening, and the importance of seeking timely medical treatment. Following the main session, an interactive question-and-answer segment was held, giving rural women the opportunity to consult directly with the physician about various reproductive health concerns.
Representing Lal Sobuj Society at the event were Md. Yusuf Ali, District Coordinator for Lalmonirhat; Ayesha Siddika Kotha, Treasurer; Azharul Islam, Event Manager; Atikur Rahman Shakil, Advisory Member; Jahangir Alam Zidan and Humaira Binte Ali, along with 10 active volunteers from the organization.
Speaking on behalf of the organizers, District Coordinator Md. Yusuf Ali said:
"There is still a strong social taboo and sense of embarrassment surrounding cervical and breast cancer among grassroots women. Due to a lack of accurate information, many women are diagnosed only when the disease has reached an advanced stage. Lal Sobuj Society aims to spread health awareness among rural women so they can better protect their reproductive health and exercise their reproductive rights."
At the end of the event, participants were provided with light nutritious refreshments and awareness leaflets to reinforce the health messages shared during the session.
