Relief is not returning to the potato-onion market

News Desk:  Despite the full season, there is no relief in the potato and onion market. Potatoes and onions are being sold at higher prices despite abundant supply in the market. Although the price has come down a bit, it is still at an uncomfortable level. Potatoes are being sold at almost twice the price of potatoes at this time in other years.

On Friday (January 12), various markets of the capital were visited, although the price has decreased slightly since last week, there is no relief in the price of potatoes. Potatoes are selling at Tk 55-60 per kg, desi red potatoes are selling at Tk 70-80. The situation is the same in the onion market. Onions of local variety are being sold at Tk 80-90 per kg. Some low-quality small onions are also being sold above Tk 70. Onion with leaves is being sold at Tk 50-60 per kg.  

The sellers say that the price of potato and onion will be normal in a few days. Shahidul, a potato and onion seller in Mugda Jhilpar market, said that the prices have decreased slightly from earlier. New potatoes and onions are starting to emerge. Now it is new so the price is higher. And if you give the order, the price will be 20-30 taka as before. 

It is to be noted that the government fixed the prices of three essential products on September 14 last year due to the gradual increase in prices. In the light of the recommendation of the Ministry of Agriculture, the maximum retail price of potato is fixed at 35-36 taka, the maximum retail price of desi onion is 64-65 taka and the maximum retail price of egg is 12 taka. The price of these products started to increase from the day the government fixed the price. In the middle, the price of onion of 65 rupees increases several times. The price of potatoes is also increasing. However, the price of eggs is currently under control. Even after fixing the price, the question arises about the market control system as the price is not effective.
