Accused father arrested for throwing daughter in pond in Kurigram

Kurigram Correspondent: A pagan father has thrown his three-year-old daughter into a pond at Bhurungamari in Kurigram. The locals rescued the child who was miraculously killed in the incident and arrested the father and handed him over to the police. Later on Thursday (June 2), the police filed a case of attempted murder and handed over the father to the Kurigram court. According to the details of the incident, Suma Khatun (25), daughter of late Abdur Rahman of Dakshin Banshjani village, got married to the son of Intaj Ali of Gopalpur village, Paschimchat of Tilai union of the upazila about 8 years ago. During this time their two daughters named Sumna Khatun (5) and Jhumri Khatun (3) were born. They used to quarrel over the birth of a daughter. In this situation, about 4 months ago, Suma Khatun moved to her father's house with her child. 3 months after the incident, her husband Shafiq Hossain also came to her father-in-law's house and stayed there. On the night of the incident, on the night of May 26, wife, two daughters and husband Shafiq Hossain fell asleep in the kitchen. Late at night, wife Sumna woke up and saw her youngest daughter Jhumri Khatun (3) and husband Shafiq Hossain were not in bed. Later, he started searching with his relatives and in the early hours of the morning, he rescued the girl who was trapped by the dry bamboo in the water of the nearby Alam Mia pond. After this incident, the husband went into hiding. Later, on June 1, locals spotted Shafiq wandering in the nearby Banshjani Bazaar and detained him and interrogated him. After informing the police about the incident that afternoon, a team of police led by Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bhurungamari Police Station Alamgir Hossain arrested the arrested Shafiq Hossain and brought him to the police station. Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bhurungamari Police Station Alamgir Hossain said a case of attempted murder was filed against the father on Thursday (June 2) for throwing his daughter in a pond and sent to Kurigram Court.
