Potato is being cultivated in Chatmohar

Chatmohar (Pabna) Representative: Kandal national vegetable crop tree potato. The tuber of this vegetable grows under the soil. Although the commercial cultivation of this vegetable is not very common, it can be seen near some houses in Chatmohar, in the yard fence, in various kinds of forest and fruit trees, on the scaffolding, in the abandoned places. In this creeper, a kind of potato resembles a round potato. This monocotyledonous plant can be eaten with both ground tuber and top potato cooked with mashed fish and meat.

According to the Chatmohar Upazila Agriculture Office, potato has been cultivated in 2 hectares of land in Chatmohar for the first time this season. Three exhibitions have also been set up at Chatmohar with the aim of expanding tree potato cultivation.

Abdul Quddus Prang, a farmer from Gunaigachha village of the upazila, has planted a local variety of potato in a demonstration plot on a land next to his house in Kharif-1/2021 season. The exhibition was set up on March 26. Upazila Agriculture Extension Department Chatmohar Pabna is implementing the exhibition.

Abdul Quddus, a potato farmer, said that this is the first time he has planted potato in 6 percent of the land next to his house. He put the vines on a platform. In addition to the macha, there are innumerable potato vines growing on different types of trees. Already the vines have begun to catch potatoes. This delicious potato is sold at 20 to 22 rupees per kg. He also said that the agriculture office has assisted in the implementation of the exhibition with various fertilizers and cash of Rs 5,000.

Chatmohar Upazila Agriculture Officer AA Masum Billah said light loamy soil trees are more suitable for potato cultivation. It can easily climb any tree. This does not cause much damage to the tree. However, it is better not to remove the potato vines from the fruit trees. This vegetable crop does not occupy much space. It goes without saying that the disease is almost non-existent. In winter the tree dies. The vine emerges again from the tuber the following year. People in Pabna area are not very accustomed to eating potato. However, if the cultivation of this vegetable increases, it will play a role in meeting the demand for vegetables.
