Apurba Pal, a student of North South University in Dhaka, has been sent to jail over allegations of insulting the Holy Quran. On Sunday, October 5, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Saifuzzaman issued the order. Today, the case investigation officer presented the accused before the CMM Court in Dhaka and requested that he be kept in custody.
The case was filed today, Sunday, by SI Hasmat Ali of Bhatara Police Station, following an incident of alleged Quran desecration on Saturday.
According to case documents, on Saturday night, October 4, several video clips circulated on Facebook alleging that the student Apurba Pal had insulted the Holy Quran. The videos and posts led to public demands for his arrest. By around 1:00 AM, a large crowd gathered in front of Apurba’s residence.
Bhatara police arrived to take the student into protective custody. Initially, the police sought the assistance of the crowd, which was reportedly offered. However, when the police tried to arrest Apurba and bring him to the station, the agitated crowd attacked him. Attempts to calm the crowd further enraged some, even turning hostility toward the police. The situation escalated beyond control, prompting additional police personnel to be called to the scene.
