Diplomatic Correspondent: The Russian House in Dhaka, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Bangladesh, organized a series of solemn and vibrant commemorative events on Friday to mark the 81st anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War.
The day-long observance began at the Russian Embassy premises with the symbolic “Immortal Regiment” procession, where participants paid tribute to their ancestors who fought during World War II. Attendees carried portraits of war heroes and proudly wore the revered Ribbon of Saint George — a historic emblem symbolizing courage, sacrifice, and military valor.
The official ceremony featured remarks from several distinguished guests and community leaders. Alexandra Khelvnoy, Director of the Russian House in Dhaka, delivered the opening speech highlighting the enduring significance of Victory Day and the importance of preserving historical memory for future generations.
Among the speakers were Elena Bass, President of the Association of Compatriots “Rodina”; Mohammad Sirajul Islam, General Secretary of the Soviet Alumni Association Bangladesh (SAAB); and Dr. Abul Kalam Azad, Chairman of the Liberation War Academy Trust.
The keynote address was delivered by His Excellency Alexander Grigoryevich Khozin, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Bangladesh, who emphasized the shared values of peace, resilience, and remembrance. Following the ceremony, the Ambassador officially flagged off a colorful Moto-Auto Rally.
A convoy of cars and motorcycles adorned with Russian national and Victory Day flags traveled across the Gulshan diplomatic area, drawing public attention to the historic occasion before concluding at the Russian House in Dhaka.
The commemorative program later transitioned into a rich cultural and literary tribute at the Russian House, where organizers inaugurated the symbolic “Wall of Memory.” The cultural segment opened with a lively traditional dance performance to the iconic Russian folk song “Kalinka,” performed by young artists.
The audience was also treated to a series of historic wartime songs and literary recitations. One of the major highlights included a collective recitation of Russian poet Robert Rozhdestvensky’s renowned work “Requiem,” alongside an emotional performance of the celebrated poem “Wait for Me” by Konstantin Simonov.
In an emotional tribute segment, a short video presentation honored the fallen heroes of the war. Members of the “Rodina” association later shared personal stories of their loved ones lost during the conflict and laid flowers before the Wall of Memory in remembrance.
The evening concluded with a community singing session featuring legendary wartime songs including “Temnaya Noch,” “Smuglyanka,” “Alyosha,” and the iconic victory anthem “Den Pobedi.”
The commemorative events not only paid tribute to the sacrifices of wartime heroes but also highlighted the enduring cultural and diplomatic ties between Russia and Bangladesh.
