News Desk: Independent Member of Parliament from Brahmanbaria-2, Rumin Farhana, has commented that in parliament, NCP appears more vocal than Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. She also said that Jamaat seemed somewhat weaker in comparison.
She made the remarks in response to a question during an interview with Deutsche Welle.
When asked to evaluate the alliance between opposition parties NCP and Jamaat in the current parliament, Rumin Farhana said she was not the one to judge their performance. However, based on statements made by NCP, she felt it was not an ideological alliance, but rather an electoral and strategic one.
She further said that as an observer, like many ordinary viewers watching parliament, she felt that NCP had been much more vocal and was making stronger efforts to create a solid opposition presence in parliament.
“In that sense, Jamaat seemed somewhat weaker to me,” she said, adding that this was not only her own observation, but also feedback she had received after speaking with others.
Explaining what she meant by weakness in the opposition, she referred to the two-day-long discussion on the July Charter under an adjournment motion. According to her, the ruling party clearly explained legal points, but the opposition failed to present equally strong counter legal arguments.
She noted that just as the government side has lawyers, the opposition also has practicing lawyers. Ordinary people, she said, had expected the opposition to present stronger legal reasoning.
Rumin Farhana added that while many emotional speeches were delivered—and there is nothing wrong with emotion in politics—because legal issues were repeatedly highlighted, stronger legal arguments could have been made.
