News Desk: After being stable for a while at high prices, onion prices have increased again in the markets of the capital. In the last one week, the prices of all kinds of onions have increased by about 5 to 15 taka per kg. But the imported Indian onion remains the same.

On Monday (January 29) night, the wholesale onion market of Karwan Bazar in the capital was visited, currently small size Pabna onion is selling at Tk 86 to Tk 88 per kg and large size onion at Tk 90, which was Tk 80 to Tk 82 and Tk 82 to Tk 84 respectively last week.

Onion of Faridpur, which was sold at 70 to 75 taka last week, is selling at 84 to 85 taka. Rajshahi onion is selling at Tk 82 to Tk 88 per kg, which was Tk 78 to Tk 80 last week. Onion of Manikganj, which was sold at 80 to 82 taka last week, is being sold at 86 to 88 taka.

Apart from this, Indian onion is being sold at the previous price of Tk 110 per kg. However, the Indian onion produced in Bangladesh is being sold at Tk 90 per kg, which was Tk 85 to Tk 87 last week. Onions imported from China are being sold at Tk 60 to Tk 70, which was Tk 55 to Tk 60 last week. The price of onion in the retail market is much higher than this.

After India announced the ban on onion export, onion prices started to rise in the Bangladesh market. Later, the price stabilized slightly as new desi murikata onions came into the market. Now the price of this daily essential product is increasing again.

When asked to know the reason for the increase in the price of onion, each seller gave a different excuse. But everyone reported the crisis and shortage of onions in the market.

Nurul Islam, a seller of Karwan Bazar, said that farmers are picking less onions from the field due to the cold weather in the last few days. Due to which there is some shortage of onions in the market. Prices are increasing due to unfulfilled demand. The seller said that if the weather changes, the price will come down again.

Md. Bablu Mia, another seller said, the season of murikata onion is almost at the end. And maybe in one month this onion will be available in the market. Due to this, the supply of onion in the market is low, the price is high. After a month, if new onions are available, then the price may decrease again. But now the price will increase, not decrease.

Mansoor Rahman, the shopkeeper of Khan and Sons, said the same thing. He said, even today I bought onions from Pabna at 82 rupees per kg. It costs 85 taka to bring this onion to Dhaka with transportation and labor costs. Then we sell at a very small profit. Wholesalers and retailers will sell at slightly higher prices.

Mansoor Rahman said that depending on the Indian onion, the price of the country's onion rises and falls, the people of Sylhet and Chittagong usually eat Indian onion. After the stop of import of Indian onion, the entire pressure is on the domestic onion. Desi pickled onions last for three months. This onion is now at the end. Due to which there is a shortage of onion in the market and the price is increasing.
