Cultivation of Hali onion in 11 thousand hectares of land in Saltha

Faridpur Correspondent: In Faridpur, known as the onion capital, onion planting is currently underway on 11 thousand hectares of land in Saltha. Seedlings produced from seeds are planted across the field. Farmers are buying and planting onions at high prices. In a few days, the onion planting will be completed.

 They got 8 to 10 times profit in the chopped onion. Because of this, the farmers said that they have started planting onions again immediately after selling them from the field.

According to the sources of Faridpur's Saltha Upazila Agricultural Extension Directorate, the target of onion cultivation has been set on 10 thousand 888 hectares of land in the upazila this season. Onion may be planted in more land than the target this year. In this upazila, different varieties of onions including Lal Tir King, Taherpuri, Faridpuri, Bari-1 are being planted.

If you go to the ground, it can be seen that the farmers are busy planting onion seedlings, ignoring the severe winter.

Talking to the onion farmers of the upazila, they said that this year the farmers are inclined towards onion cultivation due to good prices. Planting of onion seedlings is going on in every village field of the upazila. Every day from early morning onion seedlings are planted in the field after lifting. This year the workers are working for 700 to 800 taka per person. However, due to the simultaneous start of work, the demand for labor is high, so the price is being charged a little higher. Onion planting will be completed in this area within the next 2/3 days. They also said that they are not getting any support from the agriculture office.

Saltha Upazila Agricultural Officer of Faridpur Sudarshan Shikder said that 500 farmers of the upazila have been given free seeds and fertilizers under the government's agricultural incentive program so that the target of onion production is achieved. In order to increase the production of onion, the field level officials of the Department of Agriculture Extension are giving necessary advice to the farmers all the time.
