Various financial irregularities in 15 years: loss of Tk 92 thousand crores in banking sector

Economy Desk: In 15 years from 2008 to 2023, through various financial irregularities, 92 thousand 261 crore rupees have been lost from the banking sector through various financial irregularities. 

This information was given in a media briefing titled 'Bangladesh Economy 2023-24: Ongoing Crisis and Actions' at the Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD) office in Dhanmondi on Saturday (December 23) morning.

Fahmida Khatun, executive director of CPD, said that there have been various types of financial irregularities including loans through fake documents, loans in the name of non-existent organizations. At various times there are scams or irregularities in the bank which are not available in official sources. They come in the press. Media workers may bring them from official sources. By compiling these, 24 incidents were revealed in the media from 2008-2023. 92 thousand 261 crore rupees were lost in these incidents.

He said, you can calculate what can happen with this huge amount of money. Can you calculate our revenue deficit? How much is being spent on social security, how much is being spent on education and health. What could we do with this amount? 

He also said that this amount of money is being embezzled and wasted; The money in the bank is public money and how it is being spent is a matter of concern. In that context, it is important to implement and reform the rules and regulations in the banking sector.
