In the third phase, 569 candidates were elected unopposed

News Desk: In the third phase, 579 candidates have been elected without contest. Of these, 100 candidates have been elected unopposed as chairman, 338 as general members and 132 as reserved members. This information was given by the Public Relations Branch of the Election Commission (EC).

Earlier, 152 candidates were elected unopposed in 1,197 union council elections in two phases. Adding the winning members without a vote, the number stood at 252. In the third phase alone, 579 people have won the 1,004 Union Parishad elections without contest.

Of the previous two phases, 26 chairmen were elected unopposed in the 204 UPs of the first phase held on June 21 and 44 chairmen, 39 members and seven reserved members were elected unopposed in 180 of the same phase on September 20. In the second round of 634 union councils held on Thursday, 70 chairmen, 203 general members and 63 reserved members won by-vote.

The last phase was the last time to withdraw the candidature of one thousand four Union Parishads. On this day, 31 candidates including 71 chairman candidates withdrew their candidacies. The list of uncontested candidates is then finalized. Besides, the list of posts for which more than one candidate is in the final competition has also been published locally by the concerned Returning Officers.

Symbols will be allotted among these candidates on Friday. At the same time the election campaign will start. Voting for this phase will be held on November 26.

According to the EC, in the third phase, there are 50,148 candidates in the field. Of them, 4,409 are contesting for the post of chairman, 34,632 for general members and 11,105 for reserved members.

It is learned that Chittagong region is ahead in the third step in winning the election without voting. Out of 69 Union Parishads in the region, 29 have won unopposed. Out of the 115 Union Parishads in the Comilla region, 22 chairmen have won unopposed. Out of the 69 unions in the Dhaka region which are in the third position, the chairman candidate has won unopposed in 18 of them.
