International Desk: Intensive shelling by the country's police continues with the suspected assassins of the assassin of Haitian President Jovenal Moyes. At least four suspects were killed in a shootout with police in the country's capital, Port-au-Prince, on Thursday, the BBC reported.

The country's police chief, Leon Charles, said four suspects had been killed and two others detained. There are still a few fugitives. He said the police operation to catch them is continuing.

The police chief said they (the president's assassins) would be arrested or killed.

Earlier in the day, a group of unidentified gunmen shot dead Caribbean President Jovenal Moyes at his home late Wednesday night. He was shot dead by assailants at a private residence in the capital, Port-au-Prince, in the dark of night.

Police Chief Charles described the police's dramatic crackdown on suspected killers. "We have closed all escape routes from the crime scene," he said. Police have been fighting them ever since.

The suspects were armed and took three police officers hostage, officials said. These police officers were later released.

Haiti's police chief, Charles, has called on locals to stay home in the interests of safety.

The country's interim prime minister, Claude Joseph, condemned the killings in a statement - "inhuman and degrading". Several rounds of ammunition were fired at close range from Moyes and he died on the spot. The country's magistrate Carl Henry Destin told the local daily Novelist that at least 12 bullet marks had been found on the president's body.

First Lady Martin Moyes was also shot and is being treated in Florida.

Uninhabited roads in extreme fear

After the massacre, Haiti's roads turned into a desert. People are staying at home in response to the Prime Minister's call for calm.

Prime Minister Joseph has declared a two-week state of emergency in the country. At the same time, restrictions on public gatherings and executive powers have been given to the army to restore law and order.

The United Nations Security Council has condemned the assassination of President Moyes and called on all parties to remain calm in order to prevent further instability in the country.
