International Desk: 22 people have been killed in a terrorist attack in Niger, a country in the middle of the Sahara. Last Sunday, several international media reported that this attack by suspected militants took place in a village bordering Mali in the western part of the country.
Officials say the assailants attacked the village on motorbikes around 4pm local time. The attack killed 22 people, including members of the resistance fighters. Residents of an area near Motogatta village confirmed the death toll.
Militants have been active for years in Motogatta village in the Tillaberi region on the border between Mali and Burkina Faso.
Niger has been dealing with so-called jihadists on two fronts for several years. Nigeria-based jihadists are attacking the southeastern region, while militants from neighboring Mali and Burkina Faso attack the country on the western border.
General Abdorahmane Chiani, the military leader who came to power through a military coup on July 26, said on December 17 that the security situation was normalizing after several successes by the army in suppressing the chaos.
