On 25 May 2019, inauguration ceremony of the Second Meghna (Length 930 meter, Width 17.75 meter) and Second Gumti Bridges (Length 1,410 meter, Width 17.75 meter) was held in the residence of Prime Minister. Two bridges have been constructed as part of the “Kanchpur Meghna and Gumti 2nd Bridges Construction and Existing Bridges Rehabilitation Project (KMG project)”. The construction commenced on 3rd January, 2016 by Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA). 2nd Kanchpur Bridge (renamed as Shitalakhya Bridge) inaugurated on 16th March 2019. It is expected that Meghna and Second Gumti Bridges will dramatically improve traffic conditions and physical distribution between Dhaka and Chittagong. Those companies, workers, and officials involved made special effort and managed to complete the construction work of two bridges before Eid ul-Fitr so that the traffic congestion people face during Eid ul-Fitr will be mitigated this year. In the ceremony, Hiroyasu IZUMI, Ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh, and Mr. Obaidul Quader, Minister, Ministry of Road Transport & Bridges gave a welcome speech to celebrate completion of the bridge and to appreciate engineers. The Hon’ble Prime Minister communicated local officials and residents who were in three construction offices connected through a video conference system. This project is the first completed project under the Initiative of the Bay of Bengal Industrial Growth Belt (BIG-B), which was announced during Hon’ble Prime minister’s visit to Japan in 2014.
