News Desk: A court has sentenced BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman to two years imprisonment in a case filed by a freedom fighter in Narail for insulting Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. A fine of Tk 10,000 has also been imposed.

Judge Amatul Morsheda of Narail Judicial Magistrate Court-2 pronounced the verdict at 11:30 am on Thursday (February 4).

The plaintiff in the case was Shahjahan Biswas, a former commander of Kalia Upazila Muktijoddha Sangsad and an Awami League activist from Bendarchar village.

According to the case sources, Tarique Rahman, who is staying in London, made various insulting remarks including calling Bangabandhu a razakar at a rally on December 16, 2014. Shahjahan, a freedom fighter as a soldier of Bangabandhu's ideology, was shocked to learn about this in various media and filed a defamation suit against Tareq Rahman in the court on December 24 demanding justice for the defamation of Bangabandhu.

The court passed the sentence after a long judicial process in the case proved the allegations against the accused.
