Kasabar mayor beat the old man to take up the case!

Hasan Jabed from Brahmanbaria: Mayor Emran Uddin Jewel and his associates have been accused of beating the family of an old man to take up the case in Kasba of Brahmanbaria. The incident took place at Tinlakhpir in the upazila on Saturday afternoon. At least 5 people were injured in this incident. The injured are Bachir Mia (60), his wife Jahanara Begum (48), younger brother Bachchu Mia (50), sister Asiya Begum (60) and daughter Jusna Begum (30).

The injured have been treated at Brahmanbaria District Sadar Hospital. Meanwhile, Bachir Mia and his wife have been admitted to the hospital. According to Bachir Mia and his family members, Kasba Municipality Mayor Emran Uddin Jewel and Upazila Juba Dal Member Secretary Shariful Haque Swapan led the illegal extraction and supply of sand from the land owned and officially leased by us for 99 years.

As a result, we lost 3 crore rupees. I lodged a complaint with the Deputy Commissioner in October 2019. Copies of the complaint were given to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Land, Secretary to the Ministry of Local Government, Superintendent of Police, Deputy Director of Environment Department, RAB-14, Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Brahmanbaria Press Club. Following the allegations, the Assistant Commissioner (Land) of Kasba conducted a mobile court operation and seized four dredgers and imposed a fine of Rs one lakh. We refuse to pay if we demand compensation. In this incident, in November 2019, a compensation case of Tk 3 crore was filed in the Joint-District Judge's Court with Mayor Emran Uddin Jewel as the No. 1 accused and six others as accused.

The other accused in the case are Saidul Islam Sajib, ward councilor of the municipality, Sumon Chowdhury, member secretary of Upazila Juba Dal Shariful Haque Swapan and two others. Bachchir Mia, brother of Bachir Mia, said that the next appearance in the case is on January 4, 2021. Meanwhile, Mayor Jewel has been reluctant to get party nomination in this case as the time for municipal elections is approaching. On Saturday afternoon, Mayor Jewel went to Tinlakhpir with more than a hundred motorcycles. At that time, Jewel and Swapan pressured Bachir Mia to take up the case. When Bachir refused to take up the case, he was severely beaten. At that time, my sister, niece and nephew went to save him and beat us.

Later the police came after getting the news. In this regard, Mayor Emran Uddin Jewel said, the allegations are completely baseless. I don't know anything about this. Officer-in-charge (OC) of Kasba Police Station Lokman Hossain said, "I immediately sent police to the spot after receiving the news." Complaints will be investigated and action will be taken according to law.
