International Desk: The Ukrainian military claimed to have destroyed a Russian submarine by attacking it. The submarine is named Rostov-on-Don, anchored in a port on the Russian-occupied Crimea peninsula. This Kilo-class submarine was launched in 2014. The Russian submarine sank after a missile attack on the port city of Sevastopol on the Crimean peninsula on Friday, the General Staff of Ukraine's military said in a statement.
The attack also destroyed four S-400 air defense systems deployed by Russia to protect the Crimean peninsula, officials in Kiev claimed. However, the Russian Defense Ministry has not yet commented on Ukraine's claim of sinking the submarine. Crimea was annexed by Russia from Ukraine in 2014.
Ukraine's military said the submarine was repaired by Russia after it was damaged in an earlier attack. The submarine was recently undergoing performance tests near Sevastopol. The cost of the submarine is 300 million US dollars. Russia attacked Ukraine in February 2022.
Since then, Ukraine has carried out several large-scale attacks targeting the Russian Navy. Ukraine claims that they have attacked and seriously damaged or sunk at least 15 Russian warships. Among them is the battleship Moskva, which leads Russia's Black Sea Fleet. The warship was sunk in an attack by Ukraine in April 2022.
