International Desk: Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar announced his resignation citing personal and political reasons. "I am not the best person for this job," Varadkar said outside the government building in Dublin. The next prime minister will be elected after parliament returns from recess next month. He will serve until then. Varadkar became the first Prime Minister in 2017 after being elected leader of the Fine Gael party. He is the country's youngest Prime Minister and Ireland's first openly gay leader. Varadkar said, "I am resigning as president and leader of Fine Gael from today." Moreover, once the election of the Prime Minister is over, I will also move from here.

He admitted that his decision to resign will come as a surprise to many and a disappointment to some. But he also said that the decision has been taken keeping in mind the best interest of the country. Irish Deputy Prime Minister Michael Martin called Varadkar's decision "unprecedented".
