Information Technology Desk: Currently, mobile phone operators have 95 types of packages. They range in duration from one hour to indefinite. However, BTRC has directed operators to limit the number of packages to 40. Due to this, some short-term packages are being discontinued.
This information is known from Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC). The agency has ordered mobile phone operators to stop 3 and 15 days internet data packages from October 15.
As a result, mobile phone users will get the opportunity to purchase internet data packages for 7 or 30 days. There is also the facility of purchasing data packages for an indefinite period.
According to BTRC, they conducted a survey of mobile phone users and concluded that consumers are also in favor of limiting the offer packages.
Post and Telecommunication Minister Mustafa Jabbar had been expressing his anger for a long time about such packages of mobile phone operators. He told the media, 'Earlier they (mobile phone operators) used to offer 300 types of packages. Now offering 95 types of packages. Is it possible for customers to select the preferred package from 95 types of packages keeping in mind all of them? Through this people are getting confused to extreme extent. So we have asked to reduce its number to 40.'
Association of Mobile Telecom Operators of Bangladesh (AMTOB) former secretary general TIM Nurul Kabir said, 'If the option of buying data for a short period of time at a low cost is removed, it will be very inconvenient for them. Consumers should always have the freedom to choose alternatives.'
According to telecommunications sector experts and consumer rights organizations, this restricts consumers' freedom of choice. This initiative will have a financial impact on grassroots, low-income and youth. This will reduce the use of telecom services, especially the Internet.
