Husband sentenced to death for killing wife for dowry demand in Narail

Sohel Rana, Narail: Judge (District and Sessions Judge) Sana Md Mahruf Hossain of Narail Women and Child Torture Prevention Tribunal has ordered the death penalty and fine of 50 thousand taka to her husband Lovelu Mir for killing his wife Mukta Moni Begum for dowry demand in Narail. The judge made the order on Monday (October 17) afternoon. Md Lovelu Mir, who was sentenced to death, is the son of Laib Ali Mir of Char-Bakjuri village of Lohagara police station in the district. Those acquitted are Laib Ali Mir, Lovely Begum, Mamun Mir and Mosa Liza Begum of Char-Bakjuri village. After hearing the verdict, the accused Lovelu Mir fainted in Kathgara. According to the details of the case, in 2007, Mukta Moni Begum got married to accused Lovelu Mir in Charbakjudi village of Lohagara police station. Since marriage, Lovelu has been demanding a dowry of Rs 2 lakh from his wife Mukta and her family members. Out of anger over not getting money, the accused killed Mukta Moni by physical torture and strangulation and threw her in the Madhumati river on May 21, 2012. After some time, the accused brought the body of Mukta Moni, who was killed by staging a play, out of the water and said that she drowned in the water. The plaintiff along with his relatives went to the house of the defendants and found that the deceased Mukta Moni had injury marks on various parts of her body and found that she had been killed by strangulation. In this incident, Saleha Sultana, the sister of the deceased, filed a case against women and children under the Prevention of Torture Act at Lohagarh police station on June 4, 2012, accusing 5 people including the husband of the deceased, Lovelu Mir, as the plaintiff. The investigating officer of the case filed a charge sheet against the deceased's husband Lovelu Mir and Laib Ali Mir, Lovely Begum, Mamun Mir and Mosa Liza Begum. After the testimony of 9 witnesses in the court, as the charges brought against the defendant Lovelu Mir were proven beyond doubt, the judge ordered him to be sentenced to death and a fine of 50 thousand taka and the other 4 defendants to be acquitted. PP Advocate Emdadul Islam confirmed the verdict.
