Sohail Rana Khan, Manikganj: Government allocates rice to temples on the occasion of Durga Puja. After taking the rice from the government warehouse, the temple committee is supposed to sell it and get money. But Manikganj's 7 upazilas are not able to take the rice allocated for the temple committee. The leaders and activists of the ruling party are forcing the mandir committee to sell 40 taka per kg rice from 28 taka to 31 taka. It has been alleged that they are running this malpractice with the connivance of local food warehouse officials. The temple committee is being deprived of its fair dues. The syndicate cheated the temple committee and stole about 30 lakh rupees from the rice donated by the government for worship in Manikganj district. According to Manikganj District Puja Celebration Parishad sources, Durga Puja is being held in 548 temples in 65 unions and two municipalities in the district. Like every year this year too the temple committees have been supported by the government. A demand letter (DO) of 500 kg of rice per temple is issued from the office of the Upazila Food Controller. According to the rules, the temples are supposed to give rice to the committee against these demand letters. However, the members of the syndicate formed for the purchase and sale of rice in all the upazilas are under pressure and are buying this rice at a low price from the temple committee president and general secretary. It is directly and indirectly helping. The officers and employees of the concerned upazila food officer's office are involved in this financial irregularity. Badal Karmakar, President of Uchutia Karma Karpara Public Durga Pujamandap Committee of Manikganj Sadar Upazila, said that with his signature on the DO, 15 thousand 500 taka was paid for 500 kg of rice at the rate of taka 31 per kg. Due to the syndicate, they are forced to sell rice at a lower price than the market price. Upendra Mandal, president of Mandarta Purvapara Sarvajanin Durgamandir Committee of Daulatpur Upazila of the district, said that they are forced to sell rice at a low price to the syndicate. 14 thousand for 500 kg of rice. By syndicating, they are giving 12 taka less than the government price per kg of rice. It is known that in Daulatpur Upazila, the general secretary of the local Chhatra League, Atwar Rahman, syndicated and bought rice from the temple committee at a price of 12 taka less than the government price. When asked about this complaint, Chhatra League leader Atwar Rahman said that because of the geographical reason, the price of rice in this upazila is low, less money has been given to the temple committee. Daulatpur Upazila Food Warehouse Officer Anichur Rahman said that temple authorities are selling rice voluntarily. It is not for us to see. Manikganj District Puja Udyapan Parishad General Secretary Anirban Pal said that a total of 274 metric tons (2 lakh 74 thousand kg) of rice was allotted to 548 temples in 500 kg. The temple committee is forced to sell rice to the syndicate at an average price of 10 rupees less than the market price. Accordingly, 27 lakh 40 thousand rupees are being taken away from the government grant for worship in the district. Every year this financial irregularity is happening. Even if the administration is informed, there is no benefit. Manikganj district food controller Sheikh Riyad Kamal said, it is our responsibility to distribute rice. But if the temple committee sells rice to someone, it is not our responsibility. There is no opportunity for us (Khadyagudam) to be involved in this process.
