Public meeting in Ulipur demanding to stop the breach of Teesta river

Md Hasan, Kurigram: A public meeting was held in Ulipur of Kurigram to demand a sustainable and environmentally friendly way to prevent the erosion of the Teesta river. On Friday (September 30) afternoon, the public meeting was held at the Bajra Darul Uloom Senior Madrasa ground in the area affected by the Teesta river in the Bajra Union of Ulipur Upazila under the initiative of Bangladesh Environment Movement Bapa and Teesta River Protection Committee. President of Teesta River Protection Central Committee Faridul Islam Farid gave a speech in the public meeting, General Secretary of Bangladesh Environment Movement (Bapa) Sharif Jamil, Professor of Begum Rokeya University. Tuhin Wadud, President of Kurigram Society Dhaka Engineer Fazlul Haque, Journalist Advocate Ahsan Habib Neelu, Convenor of Sammilit Cultural Jot Shyamal Bhowmik, Convener of Kurigram Development Forum Ataur Rahman Biplab, Journalist Yusuf Alamgir, Bapa Pabna District President Ed. Taslim Hasan Sumon, General Secretary Abdul Hamid, Society Servant Asaduzzaman Anshari and others. The meeting was moderated by General Secretary of Kurigram Society Dhaka Ashraful Alam Chishti Shaheen. The speakers in the public meeting demanded to accept the master plan to prevent the Teesta River from overflowing and implement it through a mega project. Every year, four districts of Rangpur region suffer losses worth lakhs of rupees due to the collapse of the Teesta. It is possible to prevent the erosion of the Teesta river if mega projects worth several thousand crores of rupees are accepted and implemented. Speakers claim that the people of the area will be freed from the scourge of poverty as a result of preventing demolition.
