Ashulia (Dhaka) Correspondent: Leaders of labor unions and workers of a garment factory staged a protest in Ashulia, Dhaka, demanding the withdrawal of false extortion charges against labor leader Eamon Shikder in the police station and demanding workers' arrears. On Wednesday morning, the leaders of the organization along with the workers of Mahabuba Knit Wear factory held a rally in Shahid Minar premises of Ashulia Press Club. After that, DEPZ went around the highway with a protest and ended up in front of the police station. Md. Zahid, the sacked Swing Supervisor of Mahabooba Knit Wire Ltd, said that the owner closed the factory unannounced without paying 2 months salary before the last Eid al-Adha. If the factory opens after Eid, they ask me to resign if they want salary. Even though I resigned, my salary allowance has not been paid till today. The same complaint was made by Rozina, Nashrin and several other workers of the factory. Rozina Akhter said, the factory authorities are turning us around without paying us. We are living inhuman life with family. The factory authorities are doing very reprehensible and inhumane work with us without paying salary. We do not know where to go to get justice against these bloodsucking owners. We went to the labor leaders for help. On the contrary, they are harassing the workers by making false complaints to the police station, assuring them to pay them if they demand salary from the owners. President of Savar Ashulia Regional Committee of United Federation of Garments Workers, Md Eamon Shikdar said, about 67 men and women workers of Mahabuba Knit Wear Ltd. came to our organization and lodged a written complaint on 05/09/22 afternoon after they had not received their salaries and allowances for a long time. Md. Mokhtar Hossain of the factory authority will pay all the dues of the workers on 20/09/22 when they went to the factory to demand the outstanding salary. In case of failure to pay the dues, he wrote that he will be obliged to pay the dues of the workers by selling the goods of the factory. Two days later, the factory owner filed a false extortion complaint against me at Ashulia police station. Also, they are spreading false rumors that they have paid me one lakh 70 thousand rupees for arrears and are threatening to kill me. In protest against that, a protest program was held today in front of the Ashulia Press Club against the workers' arrears of salary and harassment on false allegations. If the workers want their dues, the owners want to suppress them by suing them. No matter how strong the owners are, we will continue the agitation until the workers get their wages and allowances. A written complaint has been given to Dhaka Industrial Police-1 in this regard. Leaders of various labor organizations and garment workers of Savar Ashulia expressed strong condemnation, protest and hatred against the tyranny of the owners of Mahabuba Knit Wear Ltd. In this regard, MD Khairul Islam and Mokhtar Hossain, MD of Mahabuba Knit Wear Ltd. counter-charged and said, "We have not threatened anyone." Rather, it was the labor leaders who threatened us. If they want to do business, they have to pay 50 thousand taka per month, otherwise they will not be allowed to do business. Moreover, Emon Shikder and Sarwar Hossain have taken Tk 1 lakh 70 thousand from us regarding the dues of the workers. Now they are trying to blackmail us. Many workers have left their jobs for 2/5 days duty and taken jobs elsewhere. Shall we go to his house and pay him. Still if someone claims salary and owes us salary, we will pay them after looking at the ledger. But the labor leaders are harassing us in various ways. That is why we have filed a complaint with the police station and industrial police. Among others present in the protest program were Garment Workers Unity League Central General Secretary Md Sarwar Hossain, Swadhin Bangla Garments Workers Federation Savar Ashulia Regional Committee President Al Kamran, labor leader Aurebindu Bepari, Md Ibrahim, Ashiq Sarkar, Abdullah Al Mamun, Shah- Alam, Md. Nashir, Mahbub Alam Bachchu, Md. Mizan, Zaheer Raihan, Raju Ahmed, Naeem Sarkar, Md. Agun, Alamgir Sheikh, Shahadat Hossain and Md. Khorshed Alam and the leaders of various labor organizations were present.
