A powerful typhoon battered the coast of Japan

International Desk: Strong Typhoon Nanmadol has devastated several coastal areas including the southwestern city of Kyushu in Japan. Typhoon Nanmadol hit the coastal region of Japan on Sunday (September 18) evening local time. The storm hit with a speed of about 150 mph.

It affected 4 other regions including Kyushu, Miyazaki, Shukoku. 3.7 lakh houses and various structures have been damaged.

Power lines were down due to torrential rains and gusty winds. The communication system is broken due to the storm. Thousands of people have been evacuated to safer places.

The country's weather agency said Typhoon Nanmadol had sustained winds of 35 meters per second, or 78 miles per hour, near the city of Fukuoka on Monday morning. Some parts of the region are expected to receive 400 millimeters (15.7 inches) of rain.

The country's meteorological department has predicted that Nanmadol will cross the main island of Honshu in Japan. As a result, weathermen have predicted heavy rain in Honshu on Tuesday under the influence of the typhoon. There is also a fear that floods and landslides may occur.

Meanwhile, ANA Holdings Inc. and Japan Airlines Corp. canceled 800 of their flights.

About 300,000 homes in Kyushu were without power on Monday morning, according to a website of the Kyushu Electric Power Transmission and Distribution Company.
