Husband sentenced to death for shooting wife in Pabna

Tofazzal Hossain Babu, Pabna: The court ordered the death penalty and a fine of one lakh rupees to the husband Abdullah alias Akat for shooting his wife Rumana Parveen Antara to death over the demand of dowry in Pabna. At the same time, three accused in the case have been acquitted. Judge Mizanur Rahman of Pabna Women and Child Torture Prevention Tribunal announced this verdict on Tuesday (August 16) afternoon. The executed Abdullah alias Akat is the son of Abdul Latif of West Jamua village of Kharira Union of Pabna Sadar Upazila. According to the affidavit of the case, it is known that after the marriage, husband Abdullah alias Akat demanded one lakh taka and a motorcycle as dowry from the family of Rumana Parveen Antara. He was physically and mentally torturing Antara several times for non-payment of dowry. At one stage on the night of October 30, 2014, Abdullah again pressed Antara for dowry. When Antara refused to bring dowry money, Abdullah brought a gun from his father's house and shot Antara. The locals came and rescued him and took him to the hospital where the doctor declared him dead. Rafiqul Islam, the father of Rumana Parveen Antara, who was killed in the incident, filed a murder case at Sadar police station accusing four people as defendants. Next year on January 16, the investigating officer of the case filed a charge sheet in the court accusing 5 people. One of the accused died during the course of the case. After a long legal process and taking the testimony of 13 witnesses, the court announced the verdict. The counsel for the state in the case was Special PP Advocate Khandaker Abdur Raqib of the Tribunal. Advocate SM Farid Uddin was the lawyer for the accused. Meanwhile, although the plaintiff expressed satisfaction with the verdict, the lawyer of the accused and the family of the convicted accused expressed dissatisfaction. Advocate SM Farid Uddin, the lawyer of the defendant, said, we are angry with the verdict. I will appeal to the high court. I hope that the accused will be proved completely innocent and will be acquitted. Advocate Khandaker Abdur Raqib, special PP advocate of the tribunal, said that this is a landmark judgment. Through this, the rule of law and justice have been established. Hope the execution will be done very soon.
