At least six protesters have been killed in Sudan's security forces. The bomber struck shortly after noon in front of a crowd of protesters, many of whom were still at large. This information was given by the news agency Reuters in a report on Friday (July 1). Thousands of people took to the streets in Sudan on Thursday to protest against the military leadership that seized power eight months ago, the report said. They also demanded that the army be handed over to the civilian government. However, the country's government virtually shut down communications, including tight security measures to quell the protests. Citing eyewitnesses, Reuters reported that security forces blocked a large crowd of protesters on Thursday afternoon as they tried to march on the presidential palace. At one point, security forces fired tear gas and water cannons at protesters. The media reported that the security forces tried to disperse the protesters with tear gas and water cannons but to no avail. Protesters marched on the president's palace. Then the security forces opened fire. At least eight protesters were killed.
