Remembrance of those killed in the Holy Artisan

Today (July 1) marks six years since the horrific militant attack on the Holy Artisan Bakery in the capital's Gulshan. Officials of various embassies in Bangladesh have paid their respects to the victims of the attack in front of the building at Plot No. 5, Road No. 69, Gulshan at 7.30 am on Friday. Amid tight security, Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Ito Naoki, Italian Ambassador Enrique Nunjiata, US Ambassador Peter Haas and Indian High Commissioner Vikram Doraiswamy paid their respects with flowers. After the tribute, Japanese Ambassador Ito Naoki said, "The attack killed seven Japanese nationals who were engaged in research on the Metrorail Line One project. We will never forget them. ” Meanwhile, Indian High Commissioner Vikram Doraiswamy said, “I am remembering all the victims of this incident, including Bangladesh and India. As friends of Bangladesh, we are very sad. It is very important to know why such incidents are happening, how they are happening. We have to work together to ensure that such incidents do not happen again. ” On July 1, 2016, a group of youths carried out a suicide attack on the Holy Artisan Bakery in Gulshan-2. Five young men with pistols, sub-machine guns and sharp weapons entered the cafe at 9.45 pm and started brutality. Militants opened fire indiscriminately, killing 20 people, including 16 foreigners. Two police officers were killed in the attack. Two employees of the Holy Artisan Bakery died at the hospital during and after the raid. In the morning, the commandos of Bangladesh Army started the operation. All five young men who took part in the attack, called Thunderbolt, died. A total of 13 people were rescued from inside.
