News Desk: Fire in the onion market again. The price of onion has gone up by Tk 20-25 per kg in just four to five days without any reason. Retailers say stockists have suddenly raised the price of onions. As a result, they have to buy at a higher price. So I am selling at a higher price.

Storekeepers say the booking rate for onions has increased in India. Due to this the traders have reduced the import. And the price of onion is increasing by leaps and bounds. Buyers are unhappy with the rising price of onions in the upward market.

Onions are being sold at Tk 80 per kg in the capital market on Wednesday (October 8). However, the onion bought earlier is being sold at 60-65 rupees per kg. But last Friday (October 1) in the capital market, the price of onion was 45-50 rupees per kg. In other words, the price of onion has increased by 20-25 rupees per kg. Retailers have expressed fears that it will increase further. Buyers are in dire straits as the price of onions rises again. Having to come and buy onions and negotiate with the sellers. The sellers are also getting annoyed with the different words of the buyers.

Enamul Haque, a trader at Mugda Bazar in the capital, is selling onions at Tk 75 per kg. However, if someone bargains, he is selling 60 rupees per kg.

He said the price of onion has gone up. Those who bought onions (sellers) yesterday or today are selling 60 rupees per kg. I bought my onion on Saturday, so I am also selling it to a known customer for 60 rupees.

Monir Hossain, a businessman from Khilgaon Bazar, said the same. He said the storekeepers have increased the price of onion. Saying will increase further.

He said that onion imports from India have decreased, on the pretext of creating an artificial crisis. And its impact on the retail market.

Monwar Jahan, a buyer at Rampura Raw Market, said, "I bought onion at Tk 40 per kg a week ago." I came to buy today, the price is 60 rupees. That is almost double.

He said the price of green chillies was Rs 200 per kg, egg yolks were Rs 40 and the price of rice was increasing. Now the price of onion is also increasing. Where are we going?

Selim Hossain, an onion trader in Karwan Bazar, said onion fields in India have been damaged due to heavy rains and floods. Also, import and export through the port will be stopped due to puja. As a result, farmers in different parts of India have reduced the removal of onions from the fields. The loading has decreased at the destinations.

However, there will be no such price after the puja. New varieties of onions have started growing in different parts of India. They will start coming. As a result, he expects the price to come down.

Hamidullah Mia, general secretary of the Bazar Businessmen's Association, said Khatunganj trader, the country's largest onion wholesale market. Idris said booking rates have gone up in India as a lot of onions were lost due to rains and floods. As a result, traders have reduced imports for fear of losses. So the supply of onions has decreased. Earlier one to one and a half thousand tons of onion came in the market but now 600-700 tons is coming.

It may be mentioned that the demand of onion in the country is 3 million tons every year. Of this, 25 lakh 56 thousand tons have been produced. However, the average production of spoiled onions is 18 to 19 lakh tons. About 11 lakh tonnes of onions have to be imported to meet the remaining demand. Most of the onions are imported from India, mainly due to the low cost of transporting them by road. As a result, as the import of onion from the country decreases, the price of the daily commodity starts increasing in the market of Bangladesh.
