Ishwarganj (Mymensingh) Correspondent: Lemon is the main source of vitamin C in Bangladesh. Due to favorable weather conditions in the current monsoon season, the yield of lemons in Ishwarganj of Mymensingh has been much better this time than before. The wheel of fortune of many is turning in this. Farmers of Ishwarganj are inclined to cultivate lemons due to good yield and demand for lemons in the market.

Therefore, the amount of cultivable land for lemon cultivation is increasing every year. Many young people and ordinary farmers have become economically self-sufficient by cultivating lemons with little capital. Many varieties of lemons are being cultivated in this upazila. Among these, paper lemons, leaf lemons, cardamom lemons, batabi lemons and hybrid new varieties called seedless lemons are being cultivated on a large scale. Farmers are smiling because of the good prices in the market.

Most of the lemon growers said that the labor cost is less as the wife and children cooperate in the maintenance of the lemon orchard. The income from the lemon orchard covers all the expenses of their family. Many people have become millionaires by planting lemons. Apart from the year of planting, stalks should be pruned once a year, the soil should be plowed, weeding should be done once in 3 months and irrigation and light organic fertilizer should be given every 2-3 months. As a result, the annual cost per acre is only 40 to 50 thousand rupees. The income from one acre of lemon orchard is at least 3 to 4 lakh rupees. In addition to creating a new garden with self-produced grafted seedlings, each grafted seedling costs 30 to 50 rupees
Can sell.

Anwarul Qadir, a lemon grower from Bilraul village in Maizbagh union of the upazila, said, "I plant lemons on 40 acres of fallow land on the advice of the agriculture office." At present, there is more income by selling lemons even after the family's expenses. I hope the lemons will be sold from the garden for 1 to 1.5 lakh rupees if they get good prices this year.

Asaduzzaman, another farmer from Bilraul village, said, "I used to cultivate paddy or vegetables in the field with my house and destroy cows and goats." Later, when he contacted the Deputy Assistant Agriculture Officer, he saw the field and asked him to cultivate lemons. According to him, I cultivate lemons and now the garden is very good. Gardening is very easy. I hope I will benefit.

Mostafa, a farmer from Charshankar village, said, "I now benefit by planting a lemon orchard on the fallow land next to my house." Since the inception of the corona virus, I have sold lemons for around Rs 75,000. Lemon cultivation is more profitable with less labor. If ketchup fertilizer is given, the tree grows more, the fruit grows more and bigger.

Ramzan Ali, a lemon farmer from Bilraul village, said the profit from the lemon orchard is high. Once planted, lemon grows for 20-30 years. Lemon requires less fertilizer, I give fertilizer twice a year, if there are more pulses I cut it. In case of insects, I give medicine on the advice of the Assistant Agriculture Officer. I hope I will be able to sell lemons for 2 to 2.5 lakh rupees this year.

Deputy Assistant Agriculture Officer Sohail Rana said lemon cultivation is one of the most profitable crops at present. The seedlings begin to bear fruit within 2-3 years of transplanting and bear fruit throughout the year. Lemons are best in lightly loamy and moderately acidic soils. Lemon is a high vitamin C rich fruit. Lemon has many medicinal properties. Mix lemon juice with honey or ginger or salt and drink it to relieve cold and cough. There are 13 lemon orchards in my block on about 3 acres of land in my block by motivating the farmers to meet their income, nutritional value and market demand. Besides, I am trying to expand more lemon orchards.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Sadhan Kumar Guha Majumder said lemons have been cultivated in 10 hectares of land in the upazila. Lemon cultivation has increased in Maizbagh, Atharobari and Uchakhila Unions of the upazila. Lemon garden owners are coming up with the right advice all the time.

As lemon cultivation is profitable, innumerable orchards have already been established in different unions of the upazila. Anyone can become self-sufficient by cultivating this more profitable lemon on fallow land including backyard. With proper care, once the seedlings are planted, the yield is 20 to 25 years at a time.
