A rare species of woodpecker was recovered in Karnafuli

Anwara (Chittagong) Correspondent: The woodpecker smugglers were taking two rare species of woodpeckers to Savar in Dhaka in a special process. It weighs more than 150 grams and is 14 inches long. Police arrested two traffickers at Karnafuli in Chittagong on their way from Bandarban to Dhaka's Keraniganj Savar. Haji Mohammad, son of the late Sirajul Haque of Keraniganj, along with two rare species of woodpeckers, raided the Moizjetech check post in the upazila on Tuesday night (November 24). Police arrested Monirul Haque, 60, and Delwar Hossain, 50, son of Savar's Akkach Ali Master. Officer-in-charge of Karnafuli Police Station Dulal Mahmud confirmed the matter.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shahina Sultana fined the two detainees Tk 10,000 under the Wildlife Conservation Act in a mobile court at 3.30pm on Tuesday, he said. Karnafuli Zone Police Commissioner (AC) Mohammad Yasir Arafat told reporters that two persons named Monirul and Delwar were on their way to Dhaka with two woodpeckers in a special process. They were searched and arrested along with Takshak. The detainees were fined and released in a mobile court. "I think the woodpecker may be hired for fraudulent work," he said. For these unscrupulous people, the biodiversity of the country is under threat today. Everyone must come forward to protect the animals.
